USMCA panel on yellow corn will help overcome differences with the US: AMLO

Bringing the differences surrounding the use of potentially genetically modified yellow corn to an international panel linked to the Mexico-United States-Canada Trade Agreement will help overcome the differences between the two governments, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who added that the Mexican side will provide the necessary evidence that led it to prohibit the use of this type of cereal for human consumption, but specified that it will abide by the ruling.

During his conference he considered that "it is going to be very important because it is not just a Mexican issue , but it is going to help consumers in the United States and around the world, because what we did, and this is why they were dissatisfied, was to prevent the use of yellow corn, which we consider transgenic, for human consumption, that yellow corn can be used in animal feed ."

Interests of large US producers

He emphasized that Mexico's priority is the health of the Mexican people, above and beyond commercial operations. He believed that the interests of large corn producers in the United States are behind the position of the U.S. government and legislators, and they are exerting pressure .

"They're like their employees, more at their service than the people, the citizens. It's a complete distortion. These representatives and senators receive money from the magnates of the arms industry , and that's why they defend the arms industry in Congress. It's an issue that doesn't help."
