Mexicali, March 18. The Ministry of Health announced the expansion of the target population for the free human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
Previously, the vaccine was available in public hospitals and health centers only for 11-year-old girls, but now it will also be used for children and adolescents receiving treatment for rape, as well as for adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
According to the vaccination schedule, girls aged 11 and boys and adolescents aged 9 to 19 undergoing rape treatment will receive a single dose.
While men and women aged 11 to 49 living with HIV should receive three doses of the vaccine.
Another group that should receive the vaccine is the lagging population, that is, adolescents aged 12 to 16 who were not vaccinated in previous campaigns.
“HPV is a sexually transmitted infection and is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women and other conditions in men, hence the importance of this free preventive measure for all young people of eligibility,” emphasized Health Secretary Adrián Medina Amarillas.
