Alcaraz wins Japan Open title in Tokyo debut

Carlos Alcaraz won his eighth title of the season by defeating Taylor Fritz in the final of the Japan Open in Tokyo on Tuesday, in his debut at the ATP 500 event.

Just nine days after his loss to Fritz at the Laver Cup, the world number one showed his dominance with a scintillating 6-4, 6-4 victory to take his 2025 win tally to 67 and eight trophies, according to the ATP win/loss index, threatening to surpass rival Jannik Sinner's record of 73.

"Without a doubt, this is my best season so far," Alcaraz said, as reported by the ATP.

"Eight titles, 10 finals, it shows how hard I've worked just to be able to experience these moments and achieve my goals."

"I didn't start the year well, struggling emotionally, so the way I came back from that, I'm very proud of myself, and of everyone around me who has helped me get to this position," said the 22-year-old.

Since losing to Sinner in the Wimbledon final in July, Alcaraz has bounced back from that loss with three consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles in Cincinnati, the US Open, and now Tokyo.

With his 24th tour-level title, the Spaniard equaled Alexander Zverev's record for most titles among men born since 1990.

Although Fritz, who twice requested a medical timeout to receive treatment on his left thigh, was unable to withstand Alcaraz's trademark onslaught in the final, he still managed to strengthen his bid to qualify for the ATP Finals.

Last year's runner-up moved up one spot to fifth in the ATP Live Race To Turin.
