Tijuana, September 9.- A massive sinkhole occurred Tuesday morning on Díaz Ordaz Boulevard in the Terrazas de La Presa area, due to a leak in the 43-year-old Florido-Aguaje aqueduct. The collapse of the pipeline left more than 632 neighborhoods in the city without drinking water and caused material damage. José Díaz, technical deputy director of Cespt, confirmed that the incident will result in the suspension of drinking water service for at least 72 hours.
"We will be working 24/7 to address the situation. Our goal is to complete the repair within 36 hours and allow the distribution systems to stabilize within the next 36 hours," said García Castro.
Jesús García Castro, director of the Tijuana State Public Services Commission, explained that the problem originated from the deterioration of the Florido–Aguaje aqueduct, built in 1982. The 54-inch steel pipe had already exceeded its useful life and was scheduled to be replaced later this year, during the low water consumption season, however, this situation unexpectedly occurred.
"The leak caused a catastrophic failure at one of the lowest points in the system, where pressure reaches up to 18 atmospheres," explained García Castro, who assured that Cespt will assume 100 percent of the material damages caused by the leak.
