Perum Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani said that Bulog's transformation into an autonomous body is still awaiting approval from the Indonesian House of Representatives.
"We'll depend on the members of the House of Representatives (DPR RI). Of course, we'll need their approval," Rizal said in Jakarta on Friday.
Rizal explained that Bulog's transformation is being formulated through a revision of Presidential Regulation Number 125 of 2022 concerning the Management of Government Food Reserves, which includes matters concerning the assignment of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN).
With the revision, Rizal continued, it is hoped that Perum Bulog can transform into an independent body.
"Perhaps in the future, Bulog will be expected to become an agency," he said.
However, Rizal stated that there is no deadline yet for Bulog to officially become an agency. He also emphasized that he will follow the government's final decision.
According to him, the government continues to make its best efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency.
"We hope so, everyone hopes as soon as possible . We don't dare say anything yet because it hasn't been tried yet, and so on," Rizal added.
The plan to transform Perum Bulog into an autonomous body was first announced at the beginning of President Prabowo Subianto's administration.
With the transformation of Bulog, the state-owned company no longer needs to calculate profits and losses, as is currently the case with corporations or state-owned enterprises.
Bulog is said to have to return to being a non-commercial institution in order to achieve food self-sufficiency, by becoming a buffer for national food supply and price stabilization.
It is hoped that this transformation can proceed quickly to support food self-sufficiency, which is targeted to be achieved by 2027.
