"I commend US President Donald Trump's efforts and leadership to end the bloodshed in Gaza and achieve a ceasefire," Erdogan said in a post on the X platform.
He added, "We, Turkey, will continue to contribute to the process of establishing a just and lasting peace acceptable to all parties ."
Earlier Monday, at a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, D.C., President Trump outlined the key elements of his plan to end the two-year-old war on the Gaza Strip, including the release of Israeli prisoners and the disarmament of Hamas.
Trump explained that his plan includes the release of Israeli prisoners within 72 hours, a ceasefire, and the disarmament of Hamas. It also calls for the formation of an international oversight body headed by him to be responsible for training a governing body in the Gaza Strip, but excludes Hamas.
The US President continued: "I acknowledge Qatar's role in mediation, and I thank its Emir (Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani), who wants to achieve peace."
For his part, Netanyahu said he "supports Trump's plan for Gaza," believing it "achieves Israel's goals from the war," as he put it.
According to the Washington Post, the plan includes an immediate cessation of military operations, a freeze on "battle lines," and the release of all Israeli prisoners within 48 hours.
It also stipulates the formation of two bodies, one international and one Palestinian, to gradually assume administration of the Gaza Strip, without involving Hamas in any political or security role.
With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving 66,055 martyrs and 168,346 wounded, most of them children and women, and a famine that has claimed the lives of 442 Palestinians, including 147 children.
