FC Bayern Munich unveils bronze statue of Franz Beckenbauer

FC Bayern Munich unveiled a bronze statue of club legend Franz Beckenbauer, which was placed in front of the team's main stadium, Allianz Arena, Munich.

The bronze monument also serves as a celebration of Franz Beckenbauer's 80th birthday.

The bronze statue of the player nicknamed Kaiser is in the same area as his former teammate and another legendary Die Rotten icon, Gerd Muller.

"This monument is a piece of FC Bayern's DNA, cast in bronze," said Bayern Munich President Herbert Hainer in an official club statement on Friday.

"It stands for Beckenbauer and everything he embodied: for style, for attitude, for Bayern. Munich has more than a monument here - it is a reflection of the city itself: proud, confident, elegant and pure," he added.

Beckenbauer was a living legend of German football and Bayern Munich. The iconic player, who wore the number 5 shirt, died on January 7, 2024.

The two-time Ballon D'or winner, in 1972 and 1976, was previously immortalized as the name of the German Super Cup by the DFB to commemorate Beckenbauer's services.

"When you look at this statue, you don't just see bronze. We see a boy who set up skittles in the pub so he could play football. A man who made New York his home but speaks in Munich dialect as if he were still in Giesing," Hainer said.
