In statements to Deutschlandfunk radio on Wednesday, Ahmedovic said that escalating the war by invading Gaza City is unacceptable and represents a further violation of international law.
"Germany must reverse its obstructive stance, because almost all European countries are doing so," he added, referring to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposals for specific measures.
"No one is asking us to be the most vocal in calling for sanctions against the Israeli government. But we must adapt our approach to European standards and make room," the Bundestag member said, noting that the countries blocking this move so far are Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Germany.

According to information from the German Press Agency (dpa), the European Commission's plans now include suspending some trade agreements between the EU and Israel. These agreements specifically regulate which goods can be traded duty-free or at preferential rates, and the proposals are scheduled to be presented to member states today.
With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving 64,964 Palestinians dead and 165,312 injured, most of them children and women, and causing a famine that has claimed the lives of 428 Palestinians, including 146 children.
