In the face of drought, they are considering resuming a desalination plant project in Rosarito.

Tijuana, July 27.- Due to the drought and water shortages in the coastal area of Baja California, the project to build a desalination plant in Playas de Rosarito is being analyzed to resume, said the Secretary for Water Management, Sanitation and Protection, Armando Fernández Samaniego, for which they held meetings with the company, which until before the cancellation of the project was Aguas de Rosarito.

"Treasury Secretary Marco Moreno and I are on a good path of negotiation with the previous company to seek a definitive solution to the desalination plant issue. We have an advantage in that Nuevo León doesn't have one, and we are surrounded by sea and can have rapid access to water via a desalination plant," Samaniego commented.

Since August 2016, the Baja California State Water Commission and the company Agua de Rosarito, SAPI de CV, signed a contract under a public-private partnership. The project was canceled in 2018 due to the private organization's lack of financial viability.

The project generated controversy because it would distribute water in Tijuana and Rosarito Beach, but would also sell water to the United States through the Otay Water District.
