Mexico City, October 9.- Cornered by the majority of the justices of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Branch and having canceled the route for the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation to determine the internal situation in that body, in a meeting with his peers, José Luis Vargas finally stepped aside to pave the political and legal way out of the internal crisis facing the institution.
"I recognize that my presidency has failed to generate the necessary consensus within this Plenary. Therefore, in accordance with my principles and convictions, I have decided to step aside to allow the Presidency to be assumed by someone—among my peers—who possesses the qualities to promote the agreements and unity that this institution currently requires. To whoever is appointed to this momentous responsibility, I express my support and willingness to build for the institution."
However, Vargas explains that he assumed the presidency in a complex environment due to the electoral process and the pandemic. Furthermore, political actors have sought to improperly intervene in the internal affairs of the Court and delegitimize the important work it performs. I regret that these intrusions have hindered the proper management of the Presidency under my leadership. I also condemn any attack on the autonomy and independence of the Court and any of its members.
He mentioned that for a legal renewal of the presidency to take place, "it must be done through the procedure established by law. Consequently, since there is no permanent absence from the acting presidency, it remains in place. Therefore, the only possible course of action is to submit my resignation as President of the TEPJF and leave the decision of who should replace me in that position to the full body of this body. In this way, the appointment of the new presidency will be in accordance with the law, will include the participation of all members, and will allow us to move into a new stage of reconciliation."
