Mexicali, October 24. Mayor Norma Bustamante proposed a modification to the regulations of the DARE Board of Trustees (a program to support the fight against drugs in schools) to the City Council in order to remove director Claudia Paola Menchaca Sánchez.
It's a measure the mayor intends to implement after the current director allegedly committed irregularities by allowing the use of DARE logos in statements against textbooks signed by Coparmex and other organizations.
Bustamante Martínez questioned the fact that the principal allowed the DARE board to become involved in opposing the textbooks. "I believe that activism against the textbooks was inappropriate, so we believe the principal should be removed from her position," she said.
Norma Bustamante stated that Menchaca Sánchez is against the federal government's educational policy.
The mayor confirmed that she submitted a reform initiative to modify the regulations of the board of trustees that promotes the DARE program, which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, which in Mexico has been called "Preventive Education Against Drug Use."
The proposal sent to councilors is that the director's appointment be at the proposal of the mayor.
It's worth noting that the mayor of Mexicali asked the director to resign; however, she remains in her position, citing that her removal is a matter for discussion with the board of trustees, which is made up of a majority of citizens.
The board's regulations indicate that the 35-person council is the body that can appoint a director.
