The NBA will implement a new rule for recording missed shots at the end of a game period, starting in the 2025-2026 season.
The NBA reported on its website Thursday that starting next season, missed long shots as time expires will no longer be recorded as individual player misses, but as missed field goal attempts for the team.
The new policy was announced after the NBA received input from various parties, including players who felt their personal statistics were being harmed by "forced throw" situations in the final seconds of the quarter.
Through this rule, players' shooting percentages will no longer be affected by long-range attempts which generally have a low success rate of going into the basket.
The change was welcomed positively because it would make NBA statistical data fairer and more accurate.
In an ESPN report, many players are reluctant to take long shots late in the period in order to maintain their shooting percentage.
