World number 1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the US Open semifinals without having to play a single point, because her quarterfinal opponent, Marketa Vondrousova, withdrew due to a knee injury.
The WO victory will bring Sabalenka together with fourth seed Jessica Pegula, who won 6-3, 6-3 over Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinals, Tuesday (2/9) local time or Wednesday WIB.
"I'm so sorry for Marketa after everything she's been through. She's been playing great tennis, and I know how painful this is for her. Take care of yourself and I wish you a speedy recovery," Sabalenka wrote.
Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, is enjoying a resurgence in New York. The world number 60, who has battled a shoulder injury this season, defeated seventh-ranked Jasmine Paolini in the third round and ninth-ranked Elena Rybakina in the fourth.
