Senate approves transfer of National Guard to Sedena; minutes forwarded to state congresses

Mexico City, September 25. With votes from Morena and its allies , the Senate of the Republic approved this morning the constitutional reform that places the National Guard under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena).

The bill was referred to the state legislatures after a discussion lasting more than eight hours, which began at 10 p.m. and concluded just after 6:30 a.m. this morning.

Once again, Morena achieved a qualified majority with the vote of PAN Senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez , so the final vote was 86 in favor and 42 against.

It was a marathon night session, in which the opposition repeatedly insisted that this reform to 12 articles of the Magna Carta militarizes the National Guard , a claim that the legislators of the "Guinea", the PT (Party of the Workers' Party), and the PVEM (Party of the People's Party) refuted.

The debate was heated for the most part. Senator Marko Cortés, national leader of the PAN, and a large portion of his party, criticized the Morena supporters for defending military, rather than civilian, command in the National Guard and the participation of the armed forces in the fight against organized crime. "What is needed is to modify the 4T's public security strategy, as it has been a failure ," they repeated.
