Israeli police said in a statement: "In the coming days, an indictment will be filed against Yaakov Perl, 49, who holds both Israeli and American citizenship, on suspicion of collaborating with Iranian intelligence and carrying out intelligence missions inside Israel."
She added: "The investigation revealed that Berl began communicating with the Iranian embassy in Morocco in 2017, seeking shelter for himself and his family. He then began publishing anti-Israel articles on Iranian platforms in 2023, eventually receiving offers of cooperation after the funeral of (Lebanese Hezbollah Secretary-General) Hassan Nasrallah in 2025, which he accepted."
After returning to Israel in July 2025, Perl carried out missions for Iranian intelligence, including gathering information on public figures, including former Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, according to the statement.
His tasks also included photographing various streets and locations within Israel, attempting to recruit local and international individuals to help him gather information, and receiving payments via digital currencies in exchange for his activities.
The police added that Berl was "aware of the nature of his activity and the danger it could pose to state security," considering his motives to be "ideological and opposed to Zionist policy."
Over the past few months, Israel has announced the arrest of several individuals accused of collaborating with Iran, although the veracity of these accusations has not been verified.
On June 13, Israel, with US support, launched a 12-day aggression against Iran, which Tehran responded to before the United States declared a ceasefire.
Israel and Iran consider each other their arch-enemy and have traded accusations of responsibility for cyber attacks and targeted killings for years.
