The European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for urgent EU action to address the devastating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The decision was taken at the close of its plenary session in Strasbourg which has been running since September 8.
"The Parliament strongly condemns the Israeli government's obstruction of humanitarian aid, which has resulted in starvation in northern Gaza. It urges the immediate reopening of all border crossings and the immediate restoration of UNRWA's full mandate and funding, subject to strict oversight. It also rejects the current aid distribution system," the European Parliament said in a statement.
The resolution was approved with 305 votes in favor, 151 against, and 122 abstentions.
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) expressed concern over food shortages and malnutrition cases resulting from limited humanitarian aid. They emphasized the urgent need for full, safe, and unhindered access to basic necessities such as food, water, medicine, and shelter.
In addition, they also demanded the immediate restoration of vital infrastructure, urged all parties to respect humanitarian obligations under international law, and called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, including the release of all hostages.
"The MEPs affirmed that Israel's right to self-defense cannot be used as an excuse for indiscriminate military action in Gaza. They expressed concern over the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip, which are causing unbearable suffering to civilians, and condemned Hamas' use of civilians as human shields," the statement continued.
The resolution also supports European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's decision to suspend EU bilateral support to Israel and to suspend parts of the EU-Israel trade agreement.
"The MEPs call for a full investigation into all war crimes and violations of international law, and for all those responsible to be held accountable. The Parliament also supports EU sanctions against Israeli settlers committing violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and calls for sanctions against Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir," the resolution said.
