The Ministry of Health in Gaza warns of a critical shortage of blood units as malnutrition spreads.

The ministry said in a statement that "blood banks in hospitals are suffering from a severe and critical shortage of blood units and blood components," stressing that "the serious nature of injuries arriving at hospitals requires additional quantities of blood to save the lives of the wounded."

She explained that hospitals' daily need for more than 350 units of blood and blood components is running out, while supply sources, including community donation campaigns, are declining due to widespread famine and malnutrition, which prevents many Palestinians from donating blood, a situation they once considered the last source of such supplies amid the ongoing Israeli blockade.

The ministry renewed its appeal to all relevant authorities to urgently intervene to increase blood supplies in Gaza's hospitals, warning that the continued shortage threatens the lives of patients and the wounded, especially in light of the escalating Israeli attacks and the hundreds of casualties reported daily.

In addition to a severe shortage of blood units, Gaza's health sector is suffering from a severe shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies due to Israel's near-total closure of the crossings since last March, preventing the entry of humanitarian and medical aid.

In this context, the Gaza Health Ministry announced on Saturday that the death toll from malnutrition resulting from Israel's ongoing starvation policy for nearly two years has risen to 420 Palestinians, including 145 children, after recording "seven deaths due to famine and malnutrition, including two children, in the past 24 hours."

She noted that since the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared famine in Gaza last August, "142 deaths, including 30 children, have been recorded."
