Treatment and prevention of inflammatory bowel disease

Dr. Amanda Pitarini Utari, Sp.PD-KGEH, a consultant internal medicine specialist and gastroenterologist from the University of Indonesia, explained the types of treatment patients need to undergo and how to prevent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

"Basically, this disease has varying degrees of difficulty, so multidisciplinary collaboration is needed," Amanda said at a press conference in Jakarta, Friday (12/9).

Amanda explained that treatment for inflammatory bowel disease generally involves drug therapy, either in the form of tablets or injections.

However, he continued, in some circumstances, surgery or even treatment with a combination of medication and surgery is required.

Several types of vaccinations may also be recommended for IBD patients to prevent infection. Chronic IBD may require surgery to remove damaged parts of the digestive tract.

However, he advised the public to prevent contracting the disease by starting a healthy lifestyle as early as possible as a long-term strategy to reduce the risk of developing it. This is especially true if a person's family has a history of IBD.
