Trump calls for new sanctions on Russia and warns Israel after attacks on Qatar

"Europe is buying oil from Russia," Trump told reporters. "I don't want them buying oil."

He continued: "The sanctions they are imposing are not strict enough, and I am prepared to impose sanctions, but they must tighten their sanctions in proportion to what I am doing."

Trump considered the rate at which some NATO countries were purchasing Russian oil "shocking," and that this significantly weakened their position in negotiations with Moscow.

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has launched a military attack on its neighbor, Ukraine, and has made ending the offensive conditional on Kyiv abandoning its membership in Western military entities. Kyiv considers this to be "interference" in its affairs.

In another context, Trump made cautious comments regarding the Israeli attack targeting Hamas officials in Qatar.

"Qatar is a very great ally, so Israel and others have to be careful," Trump said, adding, "When we attack people, we have to be careful."

Trump initially criticized Israel for Tuesday's unprecedented strike on Doha, as negotiators were working to reach a truce in Gaza. However, US diplomats emphasized that the attack would not affect relations with Israel.

The Israeli aggression against Qatar's sovereignty sparked Arab and international condemnation, with calls for deterring Tel Aviv to halt its attacks, which violate international law.

The attack on Qatar came despite its mediation role, alongside Egypt and under US supervision, in indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel aimed at reaching a prisoner exchange and ceasefire agreement.

With this attack, Israel expanded its aggression in the region. It launched an attack against Iran last June, and for nearly two years has been perpetrating an ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, while carrying out airstrikes on Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.
