Truth Commission supports donation of Ciudad Juárez military headquarters

Mexico City, July 2.- The Historical Clarification Mechanism of the Truth Commission on the Dirty War (1965-1990) supported the request to donate the building of the Military Garrison of the Plaza in the capital of the municipality of Juárez to the Latin American Federation of Associations of Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared in Mexico and to the collective of survivors in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.

The goal is for these facilities to house the House of Memory of José Francisco Mercado Espinosa, a member of the 23rd of September Communist League who disappeared after being detained in 1977 in this military facility, tortured, and transferred to Military Camp No. 1 in the State of Mexico.

The petition, the members of the mechanism stated, "is one of the numerous actions that various groups, mobilizations, and social actors have carried out and promoted with the aim of ensuring that events, names, and spaces related to government violence and repression toward opponents are not forgotten."
