Mexico City, February 9. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador once again condemned the interference of U.S. agencies, particularly the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), during elections following a report accusing him of allegedly financing his campaign illegally in 2006.
During his Friday morning press conference, the president insisted on describing the news report as "slander" and reaffirmed that the DEA was behind it , calling on Washington to avoid "these immoral practices."
"These agencies, especially the United States government, must respect each other. They must establish order so that the institutions of other independent countries are respected and this blatant interventionism is not present. It's also not just their fault, but also the fault of those who allow it," he said.
The head of the Executive once again lashed out at the author of the journalistic text, Tim Golden , and responded to the response given by the media outlet where the report was published.
"How independent can these media outlets be? They're independent of the people, not the DEA, not the US government," he said.
"Will the issue with the United States be closed, as Foreign Minister (Alicia) Bárcena said?" he was asked.
– Well, yes and no, as the philosopher of my town would say: 'It's not good, but it's not bad either.' Because all these organizations have to do with the United States government, and they should make an effort, whoever is in government, to prevent these immoral practices, he replied.
He added: "It's as if we were buying goodwill , buying consciences, handing out subsidies, spying, censoring—all of this (that) the DEA does. What right do they have? A foreign organization spying on an independent, sovereign country that authorizes it is a flagrant violation of international law, and it seemed normal."
