CELAC and China agree to strengthen cooperation

The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and China agreed on a joint action plan that includes cooperation in agriculture, trade and investment, culture, health, and education.

At the third Ministerial Meeting of the CELAC-China Forum (FCC), which was held virtually, through a video message, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador thanked the president of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping , for his government's support and collaboration with vaccines to confront the Covid-19 pandemic.

The head of the Executive branch also expressed his satisfaction and gratitude to the Asian country for the support it has provided to the Latin American and Caribbean region.

In turn, Xi Jinping addressed a video message to the CELAC membership – chaired by Mexico – in which he highlighted the importance of cooperation and wished the meeting success.

The meeting, chaired by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, aimed to outline the region's priorities regarding international cooperation with China.

The meeting was attended by ministers and high-ranking officials from 28 CELAC states , as well as the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena, and the executive president of the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), Sergio Díaz-Granados.

According to the meeting's final declaration, the organization and China are "determined to work together to consolidate the role of the FCC as the main platform for cooperation and solidarity between China and LAC based on respect, equality, pluralism, inclusion, and observance of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace."

The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and China agreed to " strengthen contacts and high-level meetings between leaders and representatives of both sides in multilateral forums and other forms of exchange, as well as to expand contacts at different levels to further share experiences in governance and public administration."
