We have a Pope! The conclave chooses the next leader of the Catholic Church.

Vatican City. The new Pope of the Catholic Church was elected during the conclave held in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.

The 133 participating cardinals cast their votes to name Francis's successor, and at least 89 of them wrote the name of the same eligible prelate.

In St. Peter's Square, the crowd cried out in excitement as they saw white smoke rising from the chimney outside the church.

Two days of voting

The so-called "princes of the Church" needed two days to choose a successor to Francis, who led the Church for 12 years with a reformist pontificate focused on the poor and migrants.

The Argentine Jesuit, who died on April 21 at the age of 88, was the target of criticism among more conservative sectors, who are now pushing for a more doctrinally focused change.

The new pope will face numerous internal challenges, such as pedophilia in the Church, the vocations crisis, and the role of women, and external ones, such as conflicts, the rise of populist governments, and the climate crisis.
