A study conducted by scientists from the University of Missouri in the US revealed the benefits of a popular diet in promoting brain health and preventing dementia, according to the Journal of Neurochemistry.

The study revealed that following the keto diet may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease, through its combined effect on the gut and brain.

Experiments on laboratory mice showed that the diet increased the number of beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus johnsonii and L. reuteri, while reducing the levels of opportunistic pathogens. These changes were associated with improved mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter balance, and lipid metabolism in the brain, all of which are important factors for cognitive health.

The effect was particularly noticeable in female mice carrying the APOE4 gene, where the diet helped restore gut microbiome diversity and return brain metabolic markers to normal levels.

Researchers believe the keto diet may be a personalized nutritional strategy to reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, especially in women who are genetically predisposed to Alzheimer's disease.

Despite its benefits, some studies have warned of potential risks. A University of Texas Health experiment indicated that the diet may increase cell aging and oxidative stress in

 male mice.
