Microsoft restores Azure cloud services after experiencing disruption

Microsoft Azure cloud computing services experienced a global outage  just a week after a similar incident hit Amazon Web Services (AWS ) .

As reported by The Verge on Thursday, this disruption impacted various Microsoft services, including Microsoft 365, Xbox, and Minecraft, as well as several other large companies such as Capital One, Alaska Airlines, and Starbucks.

On its Azure Status page, Microsoft explained that the outage was caused by an inadvertent system configuration change that triggered a problem with the Domain Name System (DNS), the technology that translates web addresses so they can be accessed by users.

"Since approximately 4:00 PM UTC on October 29, 2025, some Microsoft customers and services using Azure Front Door have experienced delays, connection failures, and system errors. We have determined that these issues stemmed from an unintentional configuration change," Microsoft said.

This outage impacted several key Azure services, including App Service, Azure Active Directory, Azure SQL Database, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Sentinel, and the Azure Portal.

Microsoft says the Azure Front Door service is now more than 98 percent up and running.
