Monique Westenberg in tears after André Hazes' theater show: 'I didn't know what to expect'
Monique Westenberg (47) is "in a kind of daze" after her ex-wife André Hazes' new theater show, which she attended Saturday evening with their son André Jr. The concert deeply affected Westenberg and caused considerable emotion. "The tears started flowing and they never stopped."
Hazes is currently touring the Netherlands with his new theater show "Closer Than Ever ." His new love, Noa Braaf, attended the premiere last week, and on Saturday evening it was the turn of his ex and the mother of his child, Monique Westenberg. The two announced their split in April of this year .
Westenberg is "in a kind of daze" after the show, she wrote on Instagram afterward. "Searching for the right words to express what this theater show did to me. There was so much emotion and at the same time, a lot of laughter."
Westenberg had no idea what was in store for her. "The first three songs were cheerful, I sang along happily. Until " Ik leven mijn eigen leven" (I Live My Own Life) started. The beginning of the past 11 and a half years. The tears started flowing and haven't stopped since. This is, without a doubt, his best show ever," Westenberg said.
It was especially her ex's words that brought back memories. "Some very nice, but many of them also incredibly painful." She's referring to the period when Hazes struggled with addiction and checked into rehab. His song " Tell Him It's Going Well " symbolizes that period. "The content of that song meant so much. Because that big, life-changing step changed everything."
Even typing this message brought tears to Westenberg's eyes. "Tears of gratitude that this difficult time is behind us. That we, apart from each other, are all happy." And perhaps most importantly: "That Dré has his real dad. And I… a friend. A friend for life."
Hazes responds under Westenberg's post: "For life! 'He's me, but better. More like his mother.' I don't say that for nothing. Grateful for everything!"
