Elon Musk announced Tuesday that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is developing an open-source digital encyclopedia aimed at competing with Wikipedia, which he has repeatedly accused of left-wing bias.
The Tesla founder boasted that the new encyclopedia, called Grokipedia, after his company's AI assistant Grok, "will be a huge improvement over Wikipedia."
"Join @xAI and help build GroKedia, an open-source knowledge repository far superior to Wikipedia. It will be available to everyone with no restrictions on use," Musk wrote in a post on the X platform.
It's worth noting that Musk's attacks on what he calls "woke Wikipedia" are not new. In 2023, he offered to buy the platform for $1 billion on the condition that it change its name. He also attacked the site last year, describing it as "broken" after it created a page about "Donald Trump and fascism."
Criticism of Wikipedia intensified this week after co-founder Larry Sanger, who left the platform in 2002, appeared on Tucker Carlson's podcast, accusing the encyclopedia of a censorship campaign targeting conservatives and libertarians.
"There's an entire army of hundreds of moderators constantly blocking people who disagree with them ideologically," Sanger said, noting that WikiScanner has previously detected edits to Wikipedia originating from CIA facilities at its Langley headquarters.
