Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour explained that gymnastics has developed rapidly in her country since she won the gold medal in the women's artistic gymnastics event in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she scored 15,700 points to win the gold medal in the uneven bars. She surpassed China's silver medalist, Qiu Qiyuan, with 15,500 points, and bronze medalist Sunisa Lee, with 14,800 points.
"Since the Olympics, gymnastics in Algeria has grown tremendously. Registration has increased significantly, and that alone makes me very, very happy and proud. I've also received tremendous support from the entire Algerian community," Nemour said, as quoted in a written statement received by reporters on Thursday.
Algeria and African countries are not big names in artistic gymnastics, so Nemour's achievement at the Olympics is an extraordinary achievement, as is competing at the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
