Fernandinho retires, Guardiola heaps praise on him

Manchester City manager Josep 'Pep' Guardiola praised the achievements of Fernando "Fernandinho" Luiz, his team's midfielder from 2013 to 2022, during his playing career until his retirement in November 2025, calling him a special figure.

"I have some special players who will always be in my heart. Fernandinho is one of them," Guardiola said, as quoted on Manchester City's official website on Saturday.

The Spanish tactician said that Fernandinho was one of the players who helped him in England when he first came to become Manchester City coach in 2016.

During their time together, Fernandinho helped Manchester City win 13 trophies, including five Premier League titles.

The Brazilian was appointed City's captain for his final two seasons as a player at the club, nicknamed The Citizens , before moving to Brazilian League club Athletico Paranaense in 2022.

"As a player, he was a great footballer. I'm sure he will always be remembered in football," said Guardiola.
