Google announced the implementation of the Project Suncatcher research project in an effort to realize the dream of finding a new way to overcome the power limitations for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers on Earth, launching AI chips into space using solar-powered satellites.
According to a report by The Verge on Wednesday, if successful, the research project would essentially create a space-based data center that could run on solar power around the clock.
Google envisions harnessing nearly limitless clean energy resources to realize the company's ambitions of developing AI without having to worry about increasing power plant emissions and utility bills due to soaring electricity demand.
"In the future, space may be the best place to scale AI computing," said Google's Senior Director for Paradigms of Intelligence Travis Beals in a blog post .
Google also publishes preprint papers that have not yet undergone academic peer review about the progress of their efforts.
