Minister of Communication and Digital: Indonesians support social media restrictions for children

Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid presented survey results showing that Indonesia is the number one country supporting restrictions on social media access for children under 14 years of age.

"I would like to present a study from Statista, which states that Indonesia is the number one country with 87 percent support for banning social media for children under 14," Meutya said at the Komdigi Journalism Awards in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He further explained that Indonesia's position was followed by France with 85 percent and Australia with 79 percent. The survey was conducted from June 27 to July 4, 2025, involving 23,700 respondents aged 18-75 in 30 countries.

"I'm quite happy that this is what our people want," said Meutya.

Meutya explained that Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of Electronic Systems for Child Protection (PP Tunas), which plays a role in protecting children in the digital space, has undergone a lengthy drafting process.

The process of drafting these regulations began after the transformation and restructuring within the Ministry of Communication and Digital following the change in nomenclature of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemkominfo).
