Olympic Peace Resolution for Milano Cortina 2026 approved by UN

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) reported that the Olympic Peace Resolution for Milano Cortina 2026 was approved by the United Nations (UN) at the 80th General Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States.

"The resolution to build a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideals was approved by UN member states by consensus," the IOC said on its website in Jakarta on Thursday.

The resolution calls on UN Member States to comply with the Olympic Peace Agreement from seven days before the start of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games (6-22 February) until seven days after the end of the Paralympic Winter Games (6-15 March), in order to ensure the safe travel and participation of athletes and officials.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry called for the resolution to be passed in her address to the UN General Assembly, which was formally submitted on behalf of the Italian Government by Milano Cortina 2026 Organising Committee President Giovanni Malagò.

"The Olympic Peace Agreement is a call to forget what divides us and focus more on what unites us," he said.

Kirsty discusses the meaning of the Olympic Peace Treaty and reminds UN member states how Olympic athletes represent a spirit of togetherness in a divided world.
