The study, published in , showed that drinking one cup of coffee a day reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation by 39%, a common heart rhythm disorder that can lead to stroke or heart failure.
The study included 200 people with persistent atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, who underwent electrical cardioversion to restore a normal heart rhythm. The researchers divided the participants into two groups: one group consumed one or more cups of coffee daily, while the other group was instructed to abstain completely from caffeine for six months.
The results showed that the group that consumed coffee experienced a significant reduction in the risk of recurrent irregular heartbeats. The researchers suggested that coffee may have an anti-inflammatory effect and could replace sugary, alcoholic, and energy drinks, thus reducing stress on the heart and improving its health.
