PSIM Yogyakarta coach Jean-Paul van Gastel has commented on the situation where his former teammate Giovanni van Bronckhorst is rumored to be one of the candidates for the new coach of the Indonesian national team."Regarding Gio (van Bronckhorst-ed), I read posts on social media that he was indeed a candidate," said Van Gastel at a pre-match press conference against Persija Jakarta in week 14 of the 2025/2026 BRI Super League at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, Thursday.
Van Gastel and Van Bronckhorst worked together at Feyenoord, GZ R&F, and Besiktas before the Breda, Netherlands-born coach accepted PSIM's offer this season.
On those three teams, Van Gastel acted as assistant to Van Bronckhorst, the man who is now Arne Slot's assistant coach at Liverpool.
Of the three different clubs, Van Gastel and Van Bronckhorst's golden period occurred at Feyenoord from July 2011 to October 2019, when they won five prestigious trophies in the Netherlands, namely two Dutch Super Cups, two Dutch Cups, and one Dutch League.
