Wikipedia has asked artificial intelligence (AI) developers to use the online encyclopedia's content ethically and to always provide attribution to its contributors.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Tuesday, this step was taken to maintain the sustainability of the Wikipedia site amidst declining user visits.
“To ensure people trust the information shared online, every platform needs to clearly explain where its information comes from and encourage users to visit and participate in those sources,” said the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that manages Wikipedia.
The organization explained that AI developers should access Wikipedia data through the paid Wikimedia Enterprise service so they can utilize content at scale without overloading servers. This paid scheme also provides a way for tech companies to support Wikipedia's nonprofit mission.
