Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati suffered a broken bone during training
Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati is confirmed to be sidelined after suffering a broken leg during training with the Spanish national team.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) stated on its official website that Bonmati suffered a fracture to his left fibula after landing awkwardly in an incident during a training session.

The three-time Ballon d'Or winner underwent tests on Sunday (November 30) that confirmed the diagnosis. She will return to Barcelona to begin her recovery and will miss the second leg of the Women's Nations League final against Germany on Tuesday (December 2).

Bonmati started the first leg of the Nations League final in Germany on Friday (November 28), which ended in a 0-0 draw. Spain will be looking to defend the title they won in 2024, with the second leg taking place at Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday.

The injury comes during a busy period for Barcelona, who will play five matches throughout December before the winter break for the La Liga Women's Championship. The Spanish champions will face Tenerife and Levante in the La Liga Women's Championship, Benfica and Paris FC in the Champions League Women's Championship, and Alaves in the Copa del Rey Women's Cup before the end of the year.

Barcelona currently holds a six-point lead at the top of the Spanish Women's League table after winning 11 of their first 12 matches. The Catalan side also leads the Women's Champions League with 10 points from four matches.

Bonmati has scored six goals and provided three assists in League F this season. She was named the 2025 Ballon d'Or winner in September, becoming the first woman to win the award three times in a row.

The midfielder was also voted player of the tournament at Euro 2025 last summer, despite missing the start of the tournament due to viral meningitis, when Spain reached the final but lost on penalties to England.
