The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) hopes that SIM card registration based on biometric facial recognition will be able to limit the freedom of digital criminals, who often use mobile numbers as entry points.
The Director General of the Digital Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, in Jakarta on Wednesday, emphasized that almost all cybercrime methods, such as scam calls, spoofing, smishing, and social engineering fraud, use mobile numbers as the main tool.
"Digital fraud losses have reached more than IDR 7 trillion. In fact, there are over 30 million scam calls every month , and each person receives at least one spam call per week. This is why the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has implemented a policy requiring SIM card registration to use facial recognition ," he added.
