The Ministry of Communication and Digital and the Indonesian Telecommunications Providers Association (ATSI) announced the schedule for implementing biometric facial recognition - based SIM card registration for new customers, which will begin on January 1, 2026.
This registration is still voluntary, meaning it is not yet mandatory, and is still in the trial phase before the policy is fully implemented starting July 1, 2026.
"So, as of January 1, 2026, people will still be able to register using two methods: the old method or biometrics. However, as of July 1, 2026, it will be fully biometric," said ATSI Executive Director Marwan O. Baasir.
