China-ASEAN experts and academics focus on AI cooperation
Indonesia is the largest economy and most populous country in ASEAN. Like other ASEAN countries, Indonesia is in the early stages of artificial intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D) and is currently aggressively promoting AI development, said Tang Liangjun, secretary-general of the India-China Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Chamber of Commerce, in an interview.

The China (Guangxi)-ASEAN Think Tank Dialogue Forum 2025 was held from December 20 to 21 in Nanning.

The forum aims to systematically gather wisdom and experience from government, industry, academia, and research sectors in China and ASEAN countries through high-level think tank dialogues and academic exchanges, and form a series of cooperation proposals on AI applications and intellectual achievements in regional cooperation.

Tang Liangjun, who was invited to attend the forum, introduced economic and trade exchanges between India and China as well as the development of AI construction in Indonesia at the forum.

Currently, many ASEAN countries have an urgent need for AI development.

Tang Liangjun said, "Some business and academic groups in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia, knowing that I have been active in China for many years, have asked me to help introduce leading institutions and companies involved in AI research and to pursue cross-border R&D cooperation."

The forum, themed "Intelligent Connectivity of ASEAN, Shared Destiny - A New Picture of China-ASEAN Cooperation," closely follows the latest developments in the accelerated evolution of the international situation and the profound adjustment of regional cooperation patterns.

The forum held in-depth discussions on key topics such as the evolution of the international situation, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (FTA) 3.0 and industrial linkages, digital intelligence empowerment and AI cooperation, and the development of common rules and cooperation with countries of the Global South.

Gao Zhikai, Deputy Director of the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), said that ASEAN is China's largest trading partner and the two sides have high economic complementarities.
