The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) explained that even simple products, such as cough syrup and cold or allergy medicines, can cause problems when used incorrectly, especially when mixed with alcohol.
Here are five key tips to avoid the risks of common medications:
Avoid mixing medications with alcohol: Alcohol can interact with many over-the-counter medications, increasing drowsiness and dizziness and slowing reflexes, which raises the risk of falls and accidents. Always read the package insert or consult your pharmacist.
Beware of excessive paracetamol intake: because many cold and flu medicines contain it, and combining it with other painkillers containing the same substance may lead to an unintentional overdose.
Do not take expired medications: Old or leftover medications should be disposed of safely after consulting a pharmacist.
Adhere to reading the package insert: even for familiar medications, as their instructions may change, including warnings regarding their interaction with alcohol.
Do not share prescribed medications: A treatment that is appropriate for one person may be harmful to another, even if they are family members.
