OJK welcomes the idea of mandatory travel insurance for foreign tourists
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has welcomed the insurance industry's proposal to require foreign tourists to use travel insurance when visiting Indonesia.

"The OJK, in principle, supports the implementation of this policy because it can strengthen risk protection for tourists while simultaneously encouraging the development of insurance products through market expansion," said Ogi Prastomiyono, Chief Executive of the Insurance, Guarantee, and Pension Fund Supervisory Agency, as stated in the Written Response to the November 2025 RDKB received in Jakarta on Friday.

However, Ogi emphasized that the implementation of mandatory travel insurance for foreign tourists is a cross-sectoral policy that requires coordination with relevant ministries and institutions (K/L).

"Especially in the fields of tourism and immigration," he explained.

In addition, the implementation of this policy needs to be further studied by considering ecosystem readiness, implementation mechanisms, and consumer protection aspects, so that it can run effectively and sustainably.

The insurance industry, through the Indonesian Insurance Council (DAI), is pushing for mandatory travel insurance for foreign tourists visiting Indonesia, inspired by the implementation in the Schengen area.

DAI Chairman Yulius Bhayangkara said that this idea could be realized through the presence of insurance booths at the Visa on Arrival (VoA) section when entering Indonesia, however, this idea is still in the planning stage and needs to be tested.

The discourse on mandatory travel insurance for tourists has also begun to be discussed at the regional level of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including at the 2025 ASEAN Insurance Council Meeting in Siem Reap, Cambodia some time ago.
