The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a statement warning of a strong link between gum health and cardiovascular disease

A statement issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) and published in the journal Circulation indicated a link between gum disease and the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries, which increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Experts explained that gum inflammation, medically known as periodontitis, allows bacteria to enter the bloodstream, promoting chronic inflammation that damages blood vessels and accelerates the development of cardiovascular disease. Accumulating evidence suggests that periodontitis is linked not only to coronary heart disease and stroke, but also to heart rhythm disorders, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease.

Periodontitis is a common disease, affecting more than 40% of adults over the age of 30 , and is more prevalent among people with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and smokers. Although a direct causal link between gum disease and heart disease has not yet been definitively proven, scientists emphasize that reducing chronic inflammation , including treating gum disease, may play a significant role in preventing cardiovascular complications.

The authors of the statement emphasized the importance of regular brushing and flossing , along with periodic preventative checkups , not only for maintaining oral health but also for supporting heart health. They stressed that this is especially crucial for individuals with risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and called for greater attention to be paid to gum health.
