Indonesian cyclist Bernard Benyamin Van Aert opened the 2026 season with a gold medal in the men's elite points race at the 2026 Track Asia Cup I in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, January 29–31.
Based on the competition results received Bernard performed best with a total of 48 points.
The 28-year-old athlete narrowly beat two home athletes, Dinesh Kumar and Nirai Kumar, who won silver and bronze respectively after collecting 47 and 45 points in the 30-kilometer race held on Thursday (29/1).
This achievement is a positive opening for Bernard, who will strengthen Indonesia at the 2026 Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games.
This gold medal is a measure of redemption for Bernard's failure to win gold at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, where he only took home bronze in the same event.
