Burkina will adhere to the Vienna Convention on Nuclear Liability

Deputies of Burkina Faso's Transitional Legislative Assembly adopted a bill on Tuesday authorizing the country to adhere to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, the Burkinabe Parliament announced in a statement.

This accession aims to clarify responsibilities in the event of a nuclear accident, to confer exclusive jurisdiction on national courts and to guarantee compensation for material, bodily, environmental and economic damage, specifies the press release.

As part of its strategy to ensure its energy independence and develop a medium-term nuclear power program, Burkina Faso signed several memorandums of understanding with the Russian company ROSATOM, followed by a government cooperation agreement in June 2025.

In 2024, the country also created the Burkinabè Atomic Energy Agency to coordinate all activities related to the development of its nuclear industry.
