Discovery of a reason for the increased risk of heart disease and diabetes in the elderly

The JPAH journal noted that a study conducted by an international group of scientists showed that prolonged sitting significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in people over 60 years of age, even if they adhere to weekly physical activity recommendations.

During the study, researchers analyzed the results of 28 studies involving 82,000 older adults, and the results showed a close link between the time a person spends sitting and the worsening of key metabolic indicators, such as high blood sugar and cholesterol, increased waist circumference, and high blood pressure.

"Dual effect": A promising drug that protects the heart and fights diabetes simultaneously

According to researchers, many older adults spend up to 80% of their waking hours sitting, and this accumulates heart and metabolic health problems without them noticing. Particularly worrying is that this negative effect is also observed in seemingly healthy people who do not yet have any medical diagnoses.

Researchers emphasize that physical activity alone is not enough to prevent heart disease and diabetes. To effectively reduce risks, it is important to reduce long periods of inactivity by standing and moving around during phone calls, interrupting television viewing with short walks inside the house, and adding some light housework to the daily activity routine.
