Heavy rainfall that has been pouring down on the Jakarta area since Thursday morning has caused a number of graves at the Pondok Kelapa Public Cemetery (TPU), Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, to be flooded.
"The estimated water level is around 40 centimeters (cm) because it has been raining non-stop since morning, and it's been heavy too," said a Pondok Kelapa resident, Surya (50) in East Jakarta, Thursday.
The flooding began at around 10.00 WIB after the area was hit by heavy rain.
According to Surya, the flooding occurred because the water channels around the TPU were small and therefore unable to accommodate the large amount of rainwater.
"The water started rising at 10:00 a.m. WIB. The drains are small, and the rain was heavy, so the water couldn't be accommodated," said Surya.
He said the flooding this time was different from usual. Water even overflowed into areas that were rarely affected by flooding before.
