Haiti: Médecins Sans Frontières warns of the seriousness of sexual violence

In Haiti, escalating gang violence and instability have displaced more than 1.4 million people, according to the UN. These unfortunate people are the main targets of sexual and gender-based violence in the country.

A mother of four was attacked by three men in March 2025 while she was on her way to the grocery store to buy salt. We will call it ''Zena'' for security reasons. At 29, his life was turned upside down by this attack. ''After that, my life became difficult. Sometimes I live without really living.'', explains the victim.

Wednesday in Port-au-Prince, Médecins Sans Frontières warned of the overwhelming level and seriousness of sexual and gender-based violence in Haiti.

''What you are about to see is not an accident; This is the daily reality of many women and girls living in a city plunged into a major humanitarian crisis marked by widespread violence and massive population displacements.'', says Diana Manilla, MSF head of mission in Haiti.

According to the UN, almost 70% of people who sought help between January and September 2025 after being victims of sexual abuse were displaced. Gangs control about 90% of Port-au-Prince, and many resort to sexual abuse to sow terror, experts say.
