Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that his country rejects Berlin's decision to resume customs controls and inspections on the German border.
"This decision is unacceptable from Poland's point of view and effectively suspends the Schengen Agreement," Tusk said during a meeting with Polish diplomats on Tuesday.
He stressed that "Poland needs help in protecting the EU's external borders, not controls on the Polish-German border."
He added that he would call for urgent consultations within the European Union on this issue with other countries affected by Germany's decision.
It is worth noting that the German Interior Ministry announced on Monday the temporary imposition of control and inspection measures on all of Germany's land borders as part of efforts to combat illegal immigration and the threat of terrorism.
This comes against the backdrop of a knife attack on participants in mass celebrations in the western German city of Solingen on August 23, carried out by a Syrian extremist who supports the terrorist organization ISIS, who had been living in Germany since 2022 and had applied for asylum in the country. The attack resulted in the death of 3 people and the injury of 8 others.
