The Indian government has ordered Elon Musk's platform X to immediately improve the technical and procedural aspects of its Grok chatbot following criticism from users and lawmakers over the emergence of indecent content created using artificial intelligence ( AI ) tools.
According to a TechCrunch release on Friday (January 2nd), India's Ministry of Information Technology ordered platform X to take corrective action against Grok, including restricting the creation of content containing "nudity, sexualization, sexually explicit content, or other unlawful material."
The ministry gave the social media platforms 72 hours to submit a report on the measures taken, detailing preventive measures against the display or distribution of content deemed "obscene, pornographic, vulgar, indecent, sexually explicit, pedophilic, or prohibited by law."
In its order, the Ministry warned that failure to comply with the provisions could jeopardize safe harbor X protection, which is legal immunity from liability for user-generated content under Indian law.
The Indian government took the step following concerns raised by users, who shared examples of Grok being used to alter images of individuals, particularly women, to appear to be wearing bikinis.
The concerns have prompted Indian parliamentarian Priyanka Chaturvedi to file a formal complaint.
Additionally, there have been reports highlighting cases of Grok being used to generate sexual images involving children, an issue that X's statement earlier Friday attributed to lax security.
The images involving the child were later removed, but the image of the woman manipulated using Grok was still accessible on X as of this story's publication.
