Nine martyrs in Gaza, including journalists and two children, and warnings of a humanitarian catastrophe due to the cold and ongoing bombardment.
Medical sources said that nine bodies arrived at hospitals in the sector since the morning hours, including three martyrs from the southern Gaza City area, three from Khan Younis in the southern sector, and three from Deir al-Balah in the central sector.
For his part, the Director General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Munir al-Barsh, confirmed that among the martyrs were 3 Palestinian journalists, who were killed as a result of an Israeli bombing that targeted them south of Gaza City.
In the same context, the Palestinian Information Center, quoting a medical source, reported that three citizens were killed by Israeli gunfire and artillery east of Deir al-Balah city. They were a 10-year-old child, his 37-year-old father, and a 22-year-old young man.
A 13-year-old child and a 32-year-old woman were killed by Israeli occupation forces in Khan Yunis, in addition to other injuries arriving at Nasser Medical Complex as a result of heavy gunfire from the occupation forces east of the city.
On Wednesday morning, the Israeli occupation army launched air raids, coinciding with the demolition of residential buildings in areas it had entered, especially east of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip, and artillery shelling targeting the eastern part of Khan Younis and the vicinity of the Bureij camp in the central Gaza Strip.
Israeli gunboats also opened fire with machine guns towards the coast of Gaza City, while Israeli helicopters opened fire on areas east of the city, in parallel with heavy gunfire from military vehicles.
“Children and adults are dying from the cold.”
In this context, Hunter McGovern, the Doctors Without Borders project coordinator in Gaza, warned of worsening living conditions as Israeli attacks continue and weather conditions deteriorate.
He confirmed in press statements that thousands of Palestinians are living in plastic shelters and dilapidated tents damaged by wind and rain. He said, "Children are dying from the cold, and even adults are dying from the cold," emphasizing that the word "catastrophe" is insufficient to describe the situation in the Gaza Strip.
McGovern noted that Israeli attacks continue on a regular basis, coinciding with restrictions imposed by Israel on the work of international relief organizations, pointing out that thousands of patients depend primarily on medical services that are threatened with being cut off.
On January 4, Israel began revoking the operating licenses of 37 international organizations that bring humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, claiming that they refused to provide lists of their employees and cooperate with the new security registration procedures.
This comes at a time when the occupation army continues to control the southern and eastern strips of the Gaza Strip and large parts of its north, while preventing the entry of sufficient quantities of food, medicine and relief materials, exacerbating the suffering of about 1.5 million displaced people in a sector that has been under siege for more than 18 years.
With American support, Israel has been waging a war of genocide on the Gaza Strip since October 8, 2023, resulting in the martyrdom of more than 71,000 Palestinians and the injury of more than 171,000, most of them children and women, before reaching a ceasefire agreement, which the occupation forces continue to violate daily.
